What Braces Treat

We know that some people find braces to be uncomfortable. We only use braces when we believe they are necessary and do our best to limit the amount of time you need to wear them and keep them as comfortable as possible.

Braces are not the only treatment that we offer in the field of orthodontics, but they are one of the most common ones. Braces treat a very wide range of different orthodontic challenges including, but not limited to:

About Dental Braces in Walnut Creek, CA

About Dental Braces in Walnut Creek, CA

Braces have been used in some form for hundreds of years, and still remain the most effective tool that dentists have to straighten teeth and improve your bite. They are made with a combination of wire and metal brackets, which slowly move your teeth into the desired position over the course of anywhere from 6 to 36 months depending on the dental problems.

After we place the initial braces, patients come back every 4 to eight weeks for an adjustment, to continue to move your teeth towards the correct position. The technology behind braces has also improved dramatically, even over the course of the past several years. Braces are now:

  • More Comfortable – Braces take up less space in the teeth and are more comfortable to wear.
  • More Hidden – There are options available to reduce the visibility of the braces.
  • More Effective – The science behind straightening teeth is better than ever before.

There are also other options available for mild to moderate issues, like Invisalign, that are almost completely invisible to the eye and come with fewer dietary and oral hygiene restrictions.

Braces Options and Differences at Schellinck Orthodontics

Dr. Schellinck’s approach to braces and orthodontic treatments is also different from other orthodontists in the area. Some of the ways that we differ include:

  • Self-Ligating Braces – We’re very pleased to be able to offer self-ligating braces. These are braces that, rather than use color elastic bands, use a metal door that holds the wire in place. This allows patients to wait as long as 8-12 weeks between visits, rather than the 4 to 6 weeks of traditional metal braces.
  • Single Sets of Braces – Nationally, only 5-10 percent of patients benefit from two phases of braces. The remaining 90-95 only need braces once. But here in the East Bay, most dentists are doing 2 phases of braces on >50% of patients which can put the teeth at unnecessary risks for cavities, scars, root resorption, and root malformation. We make sure that you’re receiving the right treatment for your teeth.

Every service we offer is designed to address your teeth and your comfort, and we will make sure that you’re getting the best possible support that your teeth, jaw, and lifestyle need.
